First blood went to OC's when they caught Southend on the break - Paul 'Chuckie' Mellish and Harry Lockwood pushed the striker out wide to make the angle of the shot difficult, but an accurately placed reverse stick shot found its way into the back of the net. Late into the second half Southend equaled the score when Southend lifted the ball towards the left post and a OC player 'helped' it into the back of the net. It wasn't long after the break that Kyle Taylor was able to put Southend into the lead. This lead was then increased a few minutes later when James Lockwood converted a penalty flick to put Southend 3-1 up. With 10 minutes to go OC's were able to fumble the ball into the back of the net in an attempt to get back into the game but Southend were having none of it - with 5 minutes to go Dave Mcarthy recieved the ball at the top of the D after a stunning pass from the Southend midfield - 4-2 Southend. The game was put beyond doubt a few minutes later when Lee Styles recieved the ball at the top of the D from a short corner - his short was skillfully deflected by James Lockwood into the top of the net to make the final result 5-2 to Southend and a trio for James L. A good result on a warm May evening for Southend 1's, however the new formation required high work rate from every player and may take some more time to perfect. Jack Summers also showed promise in his 1's debut.
