CORE SKILLS FOR HOCKEY - PART 2 - PASSING

In the second part this week, club coach Cliff 'Wonky' Lockwood talks about passing techniques in detail.

To use the videos, simply click on the 'Play' button then wait for the video to load. If you are not using a broadband connection this may take up to a few minutes.

Passing is the main fundamental of hockey, if you play as a team and let the ball do the work, it will help you in both defence and attack.

Game situation and subsequent options will determine which type of pass you choose, whether it be a fast breaking short push pass, a slap hit round the back of your midfield or a penetrative pass into the D. It will always be the technique and practice that defines the level of execution.

Looking at the video clips you will see the player's head is up scanning to make a decision, once the decision has been made the feet are moved quickly and correctly to allow the player every chance of using their well-practised technique, the player then always looks at the back of the ball through impact, with the leading shoulder facing the direction of the pass (except when disguising passes).

The effectiveness of the pass is as much down to the receiver's position as the passer's technique, this positioning in both space and technique will be covered during the next few weeks.

Remember: Never stand still and admire your pass, always support your pass, let the ball do the work!
