Southend & Benfleet Ladies 1st XI 1 – 0 Redbridge & Ilford 1st XI
After playing a friendly last week with a promising performance, the ladies didn’t look like they had had too much xmas pud!!!
Our first league fixture of 2007 was against Redbridge. It’s normally a bit of a scrappy game but both teams started off with a strong performance and held their own.
It wasn’t the usual Redbridge team, there were younger players that gave us a run for our money and put up a very tough competition. It was nice to play a pleasant side, it was just a shame about their umpire!!!
Once again, the game became frustrating due to poor umpiring decisions. The game was not allowed to flow and Sarah Watkinson got a green card for no reason at all but was told that HER dangerous stick tackle would not be allowed and next time she would get a yellow!!! It wasn’t even her in the tackle!!! Players were blown up for feet that didn’t touch them, backing in when stepping sideways and most alarmingly the NEW RULE that hasn’t been changed about the reverse shot on goal!!!! And when players did ask what they were being blown for they got no response except a verbal warning for decent?????
So besides a blatant display of bias by the Redbridge Umpire our ladies were finally allowed a goal in the last 10 minutes of the game scored superbly on an allowed reverse hit by our visiting uni drop-out Claire Powell who was at home for the weekend and felt like a little run out. Thanks hon.
Redbridge players displayed a high level of skill and were a lovely team, they even looked bewildered at some of the decisions.
Our ladies played well and deserved a result after being continuously restrained from playing proper hockey. Well done.
