MATCH REPORT - NOVEMBER 25th 2006, 2006/2007 SEASON

Southend & Benfleet 1st XI 1 v 2 Wapping 3rd XI

Another disappointing result and we are left baffled as to why we can’t get our game right. The ladies have suffered with a lot of disruption this season with only having once put out our strongest side, there seems to be a lot of shuffling around for unavailability and we just don’t seem to be settling into a routine. Saturday unfortunately was no different, Wapping scored their first goal 15 minutes into the game when the ball broke free from inside the Wapping half. Our defence was left on the half way line and a Wapping player chased the ball down putting Lisa under pressure, an unfortunate miss-kick allowed the Wapping player to poke the ball home giving them an undeserved lead considering that was the first time there had been much action inside our own half – Wapping certainly made it count!!!

Our ladies were quick to return with a goal from a short corner. The goalkeeper was very predictable (and very LARGE) coming straight out and lying on the floor, Naomi had her usual hard hitting attempt with no joy, the deflection came out to Kendal who provided a simple flick over the keeper to secure a 1-1 draw before half time.

Now soaking wet, the ladies tried to extend the score line with no luck, we had several short corners against a now very predictable goalkeeper and still were not learning that a flick or a slip to back door was needed to actually score a goal. We attempted the hard hit or slip right, still to the direction of the keepers pads. We couldn’t even get a goal to draw the score from a short corner on the final whistle!!!!

Wapping had already secured a goal from a short corner in the second half and were leading 2-1. They were also awarded a penalty flick when the ball was hit wildly out of control into Sarah Watkinson’s shoulder, but Lisa redeemed herself and saved it unfortunately getting injured again when we had to stop play as the ball hit her directly above the leg guard into her knee cap. Ouch and a few select words were used to express her pain !!!!!

We will try again next week – hopefully!

Team; Lisa Ballard, Sandy Revell©, Anne Johnson, Steph Gregory, Nicola Bryant, Stacey Chandler, Lora Sharples, Kendal Colman, Adele Cole, Chantal Heringer, Naomi Barker, Sarah Watkinson.

Southend & Benfleet 1st XI 2 v 2 Waltham Forest

Still on a high from a good win the previous week, S&B felt back on track to start making a move up the league table. With a solid team, facing top-end of league Waltham Forest, S&B took possession of play from the off and before long were rewarded with a goal, neatly pushed into the goal by captain, Claire King. A penalty awarded to WF saw pressure put on S&B goalie Lisa, but she saved the attempt and to add insult to injury, S&B's Kirsty Durban took a run into the D with the ball and dribbled a second goal past the WF keeper.

Half time saw the wind change direction, literally, and within 1 minute WF had taken a goal back. With everything to play for S&B continued to battle to keep their lead, but with more and more complaints coming from the WF team to bias referring (aimed at both umpires) and a disagreement with every decision called, the game went from a battle at one end of the pitch to another, and in their haste, S&B defence released a free hit too early, straight into the path of WF who took full advantage and scored the equalising goal. Final score 2-2 with S&B being pleased to have not lost after all their hard work, and WF putting in complaints and requesting to see players cards after not leaving with the outstanding win they seemed to have come thinking they were going to achieve.
