Letchworth 7 - 3 Southend Mens 1st XI
Another Saturday and another trip to Hertfordshire. The team started with the same shape we'd used for the last threew weeks but welcomed Stuart Jones back ino the fold from his stint playing in the national indoor finals ("I play for Loughts you know"). The only person missing was Rich Hill, who was unavailable having had his foot broken by Cliff Lockwood at indoor on thursday night. Rich, we've all been telling you that indoor isnt for you - hopefully now you've learnt your lesson. Cliff was rumoured to have been heard saying "that'll teach him not to mess with me, he's my bitch now."
The dressing room banter for this week was provided by James Lockwood, taking over the reigns from Gareth Ingram who had been doing a fine job keeping the team amused for the previous few weeks. The team seemed in good spirits.
Unfortunately the game didn't start too well when instead of looking really solid there semed to be gaps all over the place and Letchworth capitalised going two nil up early on. Then some pressure from Southend resulted in Gareth Ingram dribbling the ball into the "D" and eventually putting the ball onto a foot for a short corner. Or so everyone thought, except the South African umpire............... Unfortunately this resulted in Gareth pointing out to the umpire that in his opinion he may have missed the foot and that it should have been a short corner! (or something like that). Combined with a throwing of the stick and a 15 yard stomp across to the umpire to tell him this resulted in a yellow card. As if that wasn't enough, Ingram continued and a few more comments resulted in a red card for the centre forward.
15 minutes gone, down to 10 men and 2 - 0 down, things were not looking good. We managed to hang on until half time playing some possession hockey and kept the score the same.
The second half contnued in much the same vein. Southend kept the ball for as long as they could and everyone ran their hearts out and defended magnificently. In the end Letchworth managed a couple of goals but Southend deserved great credit in keeping the score down to only 4. If we play like this for the rest of the season we will do OK.
